Ha! In fact it is not the Umbrella Works, which is now in the possession of a friend having been sold some years ago. But kudos to you, Commander Z, for the astute reference and firsthand knowledge of the blog. Someday, when we finally get around to the ultimate Guardsman-A-Day Trivia Contest I have no doubt that you will be a force of one, and what's more, you'll win fabulous prizes.
But back on subject- the attic space that is pictured (above) is from a more recent terrain series called Tin Canyon, which is a suburb of ruined modernistic buildings and scatter terrain. It's my way of a response to the predominance of heavy gothic architectural themes and rusty junkyards that fill the collective imagining of science fiction games, sort of ruined modern shapes and processed building materials being reclaimed by the land after some disturbance.
I like the gothic stuff and the Mad Maxian vibe, don't get me wrong. But it's all so tied up in Hollywood imagery and I've been wondering more about theatrical sets and facades than about movies. The ruined cathedrals and manufactorums suggest the skeletons of a civilization with superior skills and values to the rabble that fight in the ruins-- but what about buildings the deserve to be destroyed, at least in science fiction terms?
I'll try to include more pieces from the Tin Canyon Series in the backgrounds of the Color Sound Murder Thugs in the weeks ahead, so stay tuned.
.....is that the umbrella factory ?
