Those versed in the human condition would note that emtional responses of dejection, resignation, bitterness, resentment and eventual anger would far outlive the rational responses of survival. That the ire of the people could stew for generations, breeding those emtional responses mentioned above towards those perceived to have abandoned people who put their trust, their lives, their future in the hands of those who would soon enough cut and run. Multi generational collective memories are a powerful thing.
