Regime Change 101

First thing you do is round up the authorities.

Anyone who has ever overthrown a planet could tell you that.

The Great Exhaustion, pt.3

Later on, they took everyone. But that was after the Great Exhaustion. It's important

to remember that in the beginning
anyway, we were optimistic.

The Great Exhaustion

At the beginning we were confident
they seemed so easy

the voyages I mean.

Voyage of the Krantine

Forward Observer with 22/15 Royal Deforesters during the Third Rungeria Incursion, circa 722. Note the atypical breeches in unusual arrangement with the soldier's standard field pack; also the coding pamphlets cylinder, type 107, under the soldier's left arm.

Altogether a remarkable photograph.

Rough Century X (ten)

Face it- generals don't fight. They
rarely even

carry their own luggage.

Rough Century: Every Five Years

The freighters still come more or less on schedule, every five years. Each time a Regiment is assembled and loaded aboard, dutifully. But the adventure seems to have dissipated.

That part that's centuries old.

Rough Century III

It doesn't matter, and probably never did.

The soldiers began to doubt.

Rough Century Continued

And after that and for the next 150 years the freighters showed up on schedule, in orbit roughly every five years to pick up another generation of the Regiment.

But it became less and less clear where the ships were coming from.

The Matabi: Final Crime

We thought this was the final crime, and we never recovered.

As a planet, I mean.

The Matabi: Context

The Hakon in 573 returned empty. Lost the Regiment in a warzone somewhere, dropped them off and then couldn't find them again. And the Laurie Alabaster in 598 blew up, all hands.

The Matabi, Part XI

In 708 the Broomcorn went missing in the Aeornholm Sector, was never heard from again. And then Wilhelm Troepf sailed in 732 and disintegrated six months out of orbit.

Maintenance issues.

The Matabi, Tradition

That was a shock, but hardly the first one. There was the aforementioned Bedescu in 643, sailed into a star. All hands.

The Matabi, Part IX

The freighter Comrade Ladel left with the Regiment in 853, and in 855 it sailed too close to a magnetic disruption and atomized.

All hands.

The Matabi, Expectations

It's been centuries
and most of the expeditions

never returned at all.

The Matabi, Part VI

Though you'd be surprised, it isn't like we hadn't suffered horrendously before.

The Matabi, Uncertainty

After that incident the process of recruiting for the Regiment became uncertain.

Traditions slipped.

The Matabi, Part III

By that point two-thirds of the Regiment
had been killed by cholera.

The Matabi

In 838 the freighter Matabi showed up in orbit to transport the Regiment to the Fanderum System.

They were taken to a prisoner of war camp on Makelbee 14 and interred for the next eighteen years. It seems that the general in command of the front needed to fill a quota for prisoners in the offensive, so he incarcerated his reinforcements.
